Survey Says – Experiences are the Best Investment

We all spend money. Let's face it, regardless of who we are, we spend money, it's just the way it is. Hopefully we are also saving money, this will hopefully give some insight on what to save for.

If you are saving up, what are you saving up for? Is it for a new car? new TV? Maybe a boat?

Did you know that there have been several surveys and studies to find out the best way to spend money? It sounds odd, but keep reading. Obviously our first step is to always make sure we have the essentials like a roof over our head, clothes on our bodies, food and water, etc. But after this, the best thing to spend money on is experiences such as vacations and visits to museums and places that will form memories.

The studies have shown that these memories and positive feelings will far outlast the positive feelings from buying goods like a car or a TV.

After finding this out, I was a little skeptical (as always). But then I started to think about it. I recently purchased a new TV, the first week or two it was amazing and I got goose bumps when I got to actually turn it on to watch a show of mine. Now fast forward to today, I still like the TV, don't get me wrong, I just don't have the same feeling that I once did about it. A few months prior to the TV I went on a family vacation. It wasn't an adventurous or luxurious vacation, but it was time away from home and it was a great time. I still have the feeling of that being a great time and I'd love to do it again soon.

To further this theory, the other day I was talking to our kids about fish and other sea creatures and they brought up the last trip to the aquarium. This trip was over a year ago, yet they still remember like it was yesterday and they want to go back. Now comparing that to some toys that got a few months ago, there is no comparison.

I'm not saying that everyone should go and book a vacation tomorrow. Just keep in mind if you don't know what you are saving for yet, you might want to pick something that will give you that happy feeling for a little longer.
