Save Money in Your Vehicle with a ScanGauge II

If you talk about car expenses, one of the biggest complaints that I heard from people I know is the price of gas. People often compare how much it used to cost 10-20 years ago to now. I don't think anyone is ever going to argue about how much gas costs and how it is ridiculous, but at the end of the day, what can we do about it?

This is where we need to get smart and need to get efficient. We have minimal control over the price of gas, we can shop around and visit different gas stations but at the end of the day we are still set paying whatever they charge. We need to start learning to control how much we consume, ideally our goal needs to be if we drive the same number of miles/kilometers that we find a way to use less.

This is where the ScanGauge II has come in handy for me. I purchased one of these approximately 3 years ago. Since then I have been able to adjust my driving habits to save money!

So let's talk about what the ScanGauge II does. This is a small device (4.8" x 1.5" x 1") that plugs into your cars ODB-II port (this is the same connection that the mechanics use to run diagnostics and troubleshoot issues, this is a standard on all cars manufactured after 1996). This device reads sensors and information from your cars computer, it processes this information and can display it on the screen to show you various pieces of information. This device can tell you fuel economy, fuel used, cost of fuel used for each trip, cost per mile, gallons/liters per hour and much more.

Once you have this installed (this is just as simple as plugging it in and selecting your options), you can configure your units screen to display 4 pieces of information at a time. Assuming you are using this to cut back on your cost for fuel you can make all 4 various readouts to determine your driving efficiency. Once you're driving you can just quickly peek down and see how your driving is based on the readings, then make small subtle changes like taking your foot slightly off of the gas, rolling up or down the window, etc and see real time how it effects your fuel efficiency.

On top of the obvious benefits of saving money on your fuel, the ScanGauge II offers several other features such as being able to read engine error code. When your check engine light comes up, just change the menu to read the error and it will tell you immediately what the error code is, from here you can look up the urgency of the error. If you were to take your car into a mechanic just to get this error code, most will charge you at least $100. To buy the ScanGauge II, it costs $159.95. If you watch your fuel consumption and make changes based on this, you will save more on fuel than you paid for it within the first year.
